“WAITING ON THE LORD”

Has anyone ever had difficulty “ waiting on the Lord”? I have! When we face rough times, our friends and loved ones remind us to “wait on the Lord.” They are correct, of course, but is that an easy thing to do? NO!! God’s Word has so many examples of His people in need of waiting on Him. Maybe we can see some steps, in the Word, to help us along
the way.
As I was praying for the Lord’s guidance in preparing this devotional, I was also reading through the book of Psalms. I have read through them many times before but this time God had more for me to understand in Psalms 37. Verse 34 says “wait on the Lord and keep His way”. I found in a few previous verses, what seemed to be the steps to get to that point.
In Psalms 37:3 it says TRUST in the Lord, and do good. Okay, so we have trusted in Him as our savior. Is that what is being spoken of here? No, of course not, although that is the starting place. God is speaking to His people. The meaning of the word TRUST is, firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. This TRUST grows as we read and study how God worked in lives and situations recorded in His Word. We learn as we see Him
work in the lives of those around us. However, we learn to TRUST God the most through our own life experiences.
This TRUST grows as we experience His love, mercy and grace!
In verse 4 it says, DELIGHT thyself also in the Lord! DELIGHTING in the Lord is a verb, meaning we take action
to have joy in the Lord. When satan is hurling his darts at us, it is difficult to be DELIGHTFUL! We must make a conscious effort to praise the Lord. We can quote a verse, sing praises etc. Glorify Him!!! Even Christ quoted scripture when satan was tempting Him. Matthew 4:1-11. What a great example for us!
Verse 5 says, COMMIT thy way unto the Lord. COMMIT literally means, roll off onto. Roll off onto! Think about that. Being fully dedicated to God. Totally relying on Him with our lives, our thoughts, our decisions. COMMITMENT means that certain decisions ARE MADE IN ADVANCE, irrespective of the circumstances. I will obey God’s Word, even when it’s the hardest thing to do. Psalms 119:112 - I have inclined my heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end. Psalm 119:105 - Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Proverbs 3:6 - In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy ways.
Verse 7 says REST in the Lord. REST means cease from action or motion, to be free from anxiety or disturbance. To sit or lie fixed or supported. A spiritual rest from confusion, worry, stress, useless human effort, and a break from all internal, external, mortal and spiritual enemies. Psalm 46:10 - Be still and know that I AM God. Exodus 14:13 - Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. GET OUT OF OUR OWN HEAD!!! Out of our own thoughts. All bad things that we’ve heard, seen, or felt are filed in there and satan loves to bring them into the forefront for us. He is our enemy. GET OUT OF OUR OWN THOUGHTS AND INTO THE TRUTH! Remember WHO God is.
Verse 34 says WAIT on the Lord, and keep His way! Lamentations 3:26 - It is good that a man should both hope and QUIETLY WAIT on the Lord. Psalm 27:14 - WAIT (literally WAIT in faith) on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: WAIT, I say, on the Lord. Isaiah 40:31 - But they that WAIT upon the Lord shall renew
their strength; they shall mount up on wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint. Teach me Lord to wait!
