Names of Jesus in the Gospels
Text: Matthew 16:13-16
Introduction:
13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
Revelation 1:13a
And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man,
6. Ezekiel also saw the Son of Man and the voice of the Ancient of Days. (Ezekiel 1:25-26)

A. Why the Phrase, Son of Man

Introduction:
- The name “Jesus” is found 625 in the gospels. (The Hebrew name is Joshua, a common name.)
- The title “Christ” is found 60 times in the gospels.
- The phrase and title “Son of God” is found 28 times in the gospels.
- The phrase and title “Son of Man” is found 85 times in the gospels. (How Jesus most often referred to Himself.)
- The significance of the phrase and title “Son of Man” is found in the Old Testament. (Daniel saw the Ancient of Days giving the Son of Man, dominion, glory, and a kingdom.)

A. Why the Phrase, Son of Man
- The phrase “Son of God” identifies Jesus as deity.
- Whereas the phrase “Son of Man” identifies Jesus as part of humanity. Hebrews 2:14, 17; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Timothy 2:5; Job 9:33

- Jesus - The Son of Man’s Redemptive Work
- Has come to give his life as ransom. Matthew 20:28
- Has the power to forgive sins. Matthew 9:6
- Has come to save. Luke 9:56; Luke 19:10
- Jesus wants our worship. Luke 6:5
- The sabbath was about worshipping the Lord. Isaiah 66:23
- Jesus being Lord of the sabbath (worship) can and does change it. John 4:21
- It is not the place by itself that is Holy, but the presence of the LORD that makes it holy. Matthew 12:6
- The Lord Is There - Today we worship the presence of the Lord in and through His church. (After His resurrection, Jesus met with His Church on the 1st day of the week – Lord of worship.) Matthew 18:20
- Through Old Testament examples declares the gospel (Gospel = Death, Burial and Resurrection).
